My three years at York St John studying art and design did not pan out the way I wanted it too. After a great time at Sixth form, I wanted to follow my passion for art and design. This was quickly crushed at York St John. The art in the first year was basically finger painting (I felt like I was going backwards not forwards!) After choosing to go into Design for my final 2 years, what a mistake that was. All the male tutors were rude and very immature. They would not turn up on time for lectures, and then would have a go at us for not being there! Lectures consisted of them talking for ten minutes then leaving. NO help was provided unless you really pestered the tutors, which was never appreciated and it felt like a constant battle to get on and progress!
In my whole three years I can honestly say I did not have one word of encouragement or praise. Tutors would have 5 tea breaks a day! Workshops would close at this point which was the most frustrating thing in the world when all you wanted to do was get on with your work, and unlike other institutions the workshops were only open 9 - 4.30. In my last 6 months of being there, I went in every day from 8 until 5, the tutors must have only come in twice or three days a week. Some days you would walk in and the place would be dead.
The whole course seemed such a battle, and the final marks we all got were a disgrace and incomprehensible as we had worked the hardest we have ever worked, yet a lot of people had done better in their 2nd year when they admittedly had not worked as hard.. Throughout my time there, the marking was not consistent at all, which made it even more frustrating as you never knew what they wanted from you.
I regret going to study here. It seemed great to begin with, even the tutors were great on the open days, how things differed in the class! It is so sad, because after all, the student pays to have a good course and to actually learn something! I am finding it difficult to get a job with this degree so I am hoping now to do another course somewhere well away from York St John. I hope this is useful. I would not want anyone else to go through what did.
