NSAD is one of the best art schools in the country, and one of the best for its Graphic Design course in the world.
The course I do is BA Graphic Design Degree. This is an amazing course, as it does not deal with graphic design on its own, however, it incorporates photography, illustration, publishing, animation, as well as design, all with commercial ( rather than fine art) practices and briefs. Towards the end of the first year you will be asked to specialize in one of the five sub-subjects. The one you have chosen you will do in the second and third years. I am currently half way through my second year and have chosen photography as my specialization. It is an amazing course, and gives you a real insight into what the industry will be like once you leave.
Although the student accommodation (student halls) are very limited to those who live very far away, and they are quite some distance from the university itself, they are very nice. Beechcroft is the typical 'hall of residence' spanning 2 floors with several corridors per floor. Each corridor accommodates between 7 and 12 students, who share a kitchen, 3 toilets and 2 bath/shower rooms. There is also room for your car if you bring one up.
Nicholas Mews is a set of 5 brand new large terraced houses, each holding between 5 and 7 people with 2 toilets and a bath/shower room. Here there is also room for parking and it is only a 15 minute walk to NSAD.
The NSAD Library has recently been refurbished and is now state-of -the-art with computer facilities being the latest Macs (which also support WIndows OS) and 3 floors of books.
There are no sports facilities within the school, however a girls hockey team has just been founded. If you are interested in sport, there are some sports centres around the city but the main ones are up on UEA campus.
The student union is very helpful when you want help. And the SU Bar is the life and soul of the entire NSAD. There are events on nearly every night of the week, including DJs, VJs, fancy dress nights, plus much more. It also stays open until midnight on thursday, friday and saturday nights and 11:00 pm the other nights.
NSAD is located in the heart of Norwich, overlooking the river. Norwich itself is a beautiful city, with a cathedral and a castle, as well as many fantastic shops.
The main clubs in Norwich are:
Po Na Nas - Free to get in on a monday night with cheap drinks and good music. Also has played host to some very big names such as Scratch Perverts and Jazzy Jeff.
The Mustard Lounge - somewhat expensive for drinks and occasionally entry but the Pound Partys make up for that. Amazing for music: hip hop, DnB, Dubstep, etc. acts recently played there include Jehst and Skream.
Optic - half way down Prince of Wales Road, playing RnB, Garage, Funky House, Hip Hop, Grime etc.
Mercy - Probably the biggest of the clubs in Norwich, playing RnB, Hip Hop, Cheese, Pop, Dance etc. Often hosts big club nights such as Maxim, Nuts, as well as some big music names.
There are several cinemas around the city: Cinema City, recently refurbished small cinema and restaurant just up the road from NSAD, showing mainstream films as well as independent films, and film festivals.
The Playhouse - shows more of the cult films, and also puts on live plays, stand-up shows etc. with a lovely bar with gardens over looking the river. this is located on the other side of the river from NSAD.
Vue - Located in castle mall in the city centre. Lovely cinema, with big screens showing the latest films, although sometimes you may find you have the whole cinema screen all to your friends and yourself. Doesn't accept Orange Wednesdays.
Odeon - Located on riverside complex near the train station. showing all the latest films, and occasionally the odd Premier, Juno being a recent one, and with a premier screen. Being situated in the centre of the Riverside Complex, it is surrounded by pubs, bars and restaurants. This cinema does accept Orange Wednesdays.
I would highly recommend the Norwich School of Art and Design to any one wanting to go to a fantastic, highly recognized and respected art school with the best teacher in the country.
