Cost of Living:
Shops & Banks:
I'm from Devon and I was looking for a course that combined marketing and design together in one course. Originally my course was called clothing design and marketing, now the course is just called Fashion. However the modules are still the same! We learn about branding, customer profiles, buying and marketing and this means I can either go into design and styling or the more business side of the industry which I love about the course!! The course only started last year, I'm in my second year now but we were the first to do Fashion. The school of art and design is actually one of the best in the country! Coventry is famous for its automotive design courses and is known as one of the best places in the world.
The fashion department is really impressive and the facilities are really amazing! So amazing that this year a top fashion student from central St Martins has transferred to Coventry and he told me the reason why is because the facilities are better than anywhere he'd seen before!
In my 1st year we created a beautiful collection inspired by warrior women that has been on the catwalk at the clothes show live in Birmingham and St Petersburg in Russia. It has been very successful. The course is becoming really well known and the number of people applying is growing very fast.
I've discovered this year that I didn't want to go down the making and designing route which the lecturers have been really supportive about. They have helped me find the right path for me and how to go for my dream job when I graduate.
They also have a library which cost £20 million to build and has almost every vogue magazine ever published and films and thousands of books on everything and if they don't have it they get it in for you. It's open 24/7 too.
The IT facilities are open 24/7 too which is awesome if your computer breaks the night before a deadline!
I lived in halls in my 1st year and I could see my Uni building from my bedroom window so I only had to walk up the road to get there which I loved. The halls of residences are good as there have been new halls built this year to accommodate the increasing number of students coming to Coventry. I lived in a house this year (my second year) with my friends just on the outside of the city at just £60 a week and a bus every 10 mins into uni. Most of the uni halls are en suite and have 24/7 security. There is also a student village type of accommodation called singer hall which it the best place for partying and meeting loads of people only 5 minute walk from the uni! It's one of the most popular. There is so much choice at Coventry in every aspect of uni life! I have never been bored here :).
There is so much support at the university, I'm not from the richest of families and the uni has helped me fund myself with a scholarship of £2000 which is available to anyone doing fashion and also many other courses. There is also access to a learning fund and many other scholarships and bursaries to help you get by.
The reason why I chose Coventry really though is because when I came to visit I realised just how close everything was in the city centre. The city is full of students and is very much a student city (summer term the city was like a ghost town) but term time at night the city is full of students everywhere. The accommodation is so close to the uni you never need to get a bus! You never need to step outside of the city centre as everything is in walking distance!
The nightlife is amazing in Coventry it has something for everyone! Whether you're into indie music, dance or rnb! All of the clubs do a student night usually with drink promotions as cheap as 50p!!
The city centre has all of the shops that you need: great clothes shops such as Republic, River Island, Topshop, H&M, etc! Birmingham is 15 mins by train which takes you straight into the Bullring!
Coventry is really homely for me, I'm from Devon and thought moving away to a city I would be sooo scared! But as soon as I got here I found that people were friendlier than back home! Everyone is younger and most likely to be a student, plus the city isn't daunting as you just stay in the centre where the nightlife, accommodation and the uni is so you never get lost! I've never had any problems with Coventry. It's been perfect for me and I've met amazing friends for life hopefully :) people always judge Coventry before they've been but it's developing loads and everything is new and so much is happening. I'm hoping to find a masters degree I want to do because I really don't want to leave.
I've had the best years of my life here, as soon as you go to visit Coventry you'll know what I'm talking about it's awesome!
